INDIA: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CONDEMNS SHOCKING MURDER OF KANHAIYA LAL

He had reported threats against his life weeks before his murder


In response to the horrific murder of a tailor in Rajasthan on Tuesday afternoon, Aakar Patel, chair of board of Amnesty International India, said:

“Amnesty International strongly condemns the horrific killing of Kanhaiya Lal. The targeted gruesome murder shows utter contempt for the right to life. The Indian authorities must ensure a prompt, thorough, independent, impartial, transparent and effective investigation into the killing, and bring those suspected to be responsible to justice in fair trials and without resorting to the death penalty. The Indian authorities must ensure access to justice and effective remedies for the victim and their families.”

“The killing highlights failure of the Indian authorities to uphold their international human rights obligations to protect everyone against systematic discrimination and violence, and to promptly bring to justice those responsible. The government must ensure that there is no impunity for those responsible for hate crimes and take urgent steps to protect people against any attacks, including reprisal attacks.”

Background

On 28 June 2022, a tailor named Kanhaiya Lal, was killed in Udaipur district of the state of Rajasthan in India by two men, who filmed the act and posted it online.

Police has arrested the two men who had identified themselves in the video.

The victim had allegedly put up a social media post supporting former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who had made statements deemed insulting to Prophet Muhammad last month in a television news debate.

He had reported threats against his life weeks before his murder.
