HONDURAS: CONGRESS MUST REJECT CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM THAT PERPETUATES THE CRIMINALIZATION OF ABORTION

Instead of continuing down the path of criminalization and clandestine abortions, Honduras should follow Argentina’s lead and put an end to a law that damages public health and the human rights of thousands of women and girls every year

In response to efforts to reform the constitution with the aim of making it impossible to legalize abortion in Honduras, Erika Guevara-Rosas, Americas director at Amnesty International, said:

“This reform seeks to perpetuate at constitutional level a violation of human rights, specifically the sexual and reproductive rights that women, girls and people with reproductive capacity have suffered for decades in Honduras. If ratified by Congress and President Juan Orlando Hernández, it would effectively make it impossible to introduce a law decriminalizing abortion under any circumstances or even to guarantee access to emergency contraception.”
