The government’s decision not to renew the mandate of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, just when Congress should be analyzing the preliminary hearing against President Jimmy Morales, is another maneuver to weaken the fight against impunity in the country
Reacting to the decision of the government of Jimmy Morales to revoke the mandate of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala, Erika Guevara-Rosas, Americas Director at Amnesty International, said:
“The government’s decision not to renew the mandate of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, just when Congress should be analyzing the preliminary hearing against President Jimmy Morales, is another maneuver to weaken the fight against impunity in the country.”
“The unusual deployment and presence of security forces in front of the Commission and during the president's announcement is an effort to intimidate the people and institutions working for justice and human rights. The government cannot lead the country to repeat its shameful history of decades gone by.”
